Remember,
Orkut? You may not remember, it was the Google that gave sparked the social
media phenomenon by launching Orkut 10 years ago. Today the company announced
that this service will shut down completely on 30th September. This
decision is not surprising since its other services like Google+ and Youtube
are gaining high popularity while Orkut is going down on the road of popularity.
Orkut
after the launch in 2004 gained traction in Brazil and India but never really
picked up pace in U.S. Facebook went online in 2004 and its growth declined at
a really fast pace even in these countries.
“Over
the past decade, Youtube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities
springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these
communities have outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell’,
said Google in a post on Orkut blog.
Google
stopped updating Orkut around 2012 and its official blog wasn’t updated till
now with the news of its shutting down. Orkut
users can transfer their photos, scraps and community post anytime between now
and September 2016. The company is also launching Orkut Archive which will
launch as soon as the service goes down.
It’s
always said to see Google’s service bite the dust and the Orkut’s closure is no
very different. If you are feeling nostalgic than it’s not too late. You have a
few months still to use it. Unfortunately, Google has already shut down its
sign-up page for new accounts.
